Recent attacks on an Ivorian beach resort has officially left 19 people dead, and unofficially left over 22 dead.
The attacks happened just last week, Sunday, March 13th in the West African nation, Ivory Coast. Witnesses say six attackers rampaged the beach and stormed through three hotels at Grand-Bassam. This small town lies just east outside the major city, Abidjan.
This particular resort was widely known for hosting Westerners and wealthy Ivorians who often gathered there on Sundays. Ivorian law enforcement say that this may have been why the six terrorists targeted that location. All six killers however, were eventually shot down by military personnel. Soon after the attack, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb boastfully claimed responsibility, saying that the killers were martyrs and, “knights of the desert.”
Ivorian President immediately rushed to the scene and declared three days of national mourning afterwards. He urged the Ivorian people to come together and to not give in to fear. He said, “I condemn in the strongest terms these heinous and cowardly attacks on innocent people. Ivory Coast will not be intimidated by terrorists.”
We send our sincerest condolences to all who have lost loved ones during this painful and difficult time. African Girls Killing It stands with the Ivory Coast.
